Belly Band Journal/3 Element Collage - 06

3 Element Collage 06
These two collages came together rather quickly during the just less than an hour production time for all the 3 element collages in this journal.  The mail arrived and there was a wonderful surprise for me.  Jacki Long had sent me an envelope with her July 6 x 6 collage that not only had the two-sided collages but extra ephemera.  In her message to me she had included the word RUSH.  It had to go right into the collage that I was working on.  It was meant to be.

Belly Band Journal/3 Element Collage - 04

3 Element Collage 04

If you have never tried the exercise of creating one element collages through ten element collages I highly recommend it.  You will discover the number of elements you prefer.  I found three to five is where my comfort level is.  When I branch out from there I start swimming in the concern of whether the composition works or not.  Much more thought, for me, must be taken beyond five elements.

Belly Band Journal/3 Element Collage - 03

3 Element Collage 03
When I discovered the Velcro dots I knew immediately that they would be good for closures.  They are so easily applied.  So clever, Velcro.  To think that the idea came from seeds that attach themselves to clothing or fur to travel for continued survival.  It really is survival of the fittest.

Belly Band Journal/3 Element Collage - 02

3 Element Collage 02
I suppose I could have created collages that would sit next to one another with some sort of theme in mind.  They are diverse with the exception that they each have three elements.  It does not bother me that they are seemingly divisive.  I imagine we could debate whether or not that is true.  For instance, both have numbers; both have females; both have red.

What I know that is absolute is that I created all of the collages from materials close at hand, just off the table I was working on, and I finished all twelve collages in one hour actually fifty-seven minutes.

Belly Band Journal/3 Element Collage - Covers and 01

Cover

3 Element 01
This art journal has a belly band that is attached except for the tab you see on the right. I wrapped the belly band around the journal gluing two parts. The third part on the right above is for the closure of which I have two types.  The first, on the left above has a hole punched and a wrap around piece of sari ribbon and the one above on the right has a Velcro closure.  For the collages in this journal I only used three elements in each.

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Cover

08 is the last of this series and I finally got the cover scanned so that is show here at the end as well.  Since I love this binding for its ease and how it allows for the pages to turn and remain flat I started another journal yesterday which I hope to bind today.

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -07

My eyes are so tired right now.  We have had a lot of smoke from the wild fires and my eyes have been watery.  I also have been up since 4:30 this morning working on art all day.  I love all art days but now after do 14 collages I am tired.

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -06

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -06

This past Sunday I went to B.C., Canada to take a one day 52 Pickup workshop with Seth Apter.  What fun!  I had a blast and came home with 52 playing cards ready with backgrounds for the next step, collage.  That is 52 plus 1 times 2 collages to do, 106 collages total.  That is a record for me.....106 projects waiting to be completed! It is my goal to have them all done prior to my trips in October and November.  Seth suggested that we do one each week for a year.  I like that goal but then I thought about blogging and if I were to complete all 106 I might have enough entries for each day of the rest of the 2018.  I already have 27 entries lined up and some others I have scanned but have not posted to the line up.  I best get busy!

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -05

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -05

Perhaps this piece is a bit dark....the elephant, the photo, the blue of the envelope, and the use of blue paint darkens the appearance.  So I just pulled it out to look again in person and, yes, it is dark but the scan makes it darker.  While working on the substrate I never considered it being too dark.  Only on reflection after time passed did I notice it.

I just scored big time from my art friend, Connie Rose.  She found several hundred envelopes at a flea market in northern California.  So I now have a supply to last me quite some time.

Elephant Slip Knot Binding Journal -03

Two wonderful things happened in the same day at the end of last week.  I found out that someone bought a piece of art of mine from the show in New Zealand that I am in.  I also got an award for a collage that I did.  The piece has been shown here....it is called Obsolete.  I am kind of on a cloud right now.

Fruit Paid (sold)

Obsolete (Peggy Tuttle Memorial Award)

I am doing something a bit new in this series.  You have probably noticed that I use graphite around each of the photographs in my collages.  In addition to that I am also adding a bit of ephemera over the collaged photo.  In this case you will notice that the elephant's trunk on the lower left edge of the photo.

In each of the elephant slip knot series I used the sewing machine to do random stitching.  There was something on the elephant ephemera that I wanted to hide.  Camouflaging with a magazine word cut in half horizontally did the trick.

The sign language means horse in this one.  The feather is a bit grisly.  It means throat cut and scalp taken!

Envelope Journal Pages Six and Seven

The Native American is signing "tipi" on the left and "rising sun" on the right.  The arrow on the top left signifies war.  The broken feather on the left means "wounded several times" and the one on the right means "struck 5 blows at his enemy".

Envelope Journal Pages Four and Five

The sign language being displayed on the left means "you" and the one on the right means "man".  I am feeling good about the combination of two types of communication in these pieces, the English alphabet and the Native American sign language.  That was intuitive on my part, not a conscious effort but it works well.

Envelope Journal Page One

I have done a bit of work on the left hand side since I photographed this book.  I added arrows, one broken and one whole.  They signify peace and war.  Perhaps I can get to it and photograph again for later on.  I am just loving adding words or parts of words to a collage and then sanding them or not.
The sign language means "sunset".

Envelope Journal

Envelope Journal (front cover)

Envelope Journal (back cover)
This is the second journal that I taught last week on Whidbey Island, WA.  I used my handmade deli papers and words from magazines in the collages in this journal.  I used some amazing Indian sign language images for the focal points.  The closure for this journal is a punched hole with wrap around sari ribbon.

Emorywood Road

Emorywood Road
This is the last piece in this series of eight.  I really enjoyed doing this book using old letters found at a garage sale.  I am fresh out of old letters now with the exception of the ones that my father wrote to his mother during WWII.  They are redacted.  I have to decide if I am going to use them or not.  I am thinking I will since what will happen to them after I have passed?  A recycled center or a landfill?  I might as well put them to use.

I am home from the most tremendous of days.  I taught a journaling class on Whidbey Island northeast of Seattle.  The students were fantastic and their work amazing.  I am tired as I imagine everyone is as well.  But it sure was fun!
