February Artist Playing Cards - 05

February  Art Playing Cards 05

Found number 5!  Yeah!
There is going to be a show of artist playing cards in Illinois next month.  I finally got mine together and I am mailing them today.  The ones I am entering I have not shown here but will after this series is completed.

February Artist Playing Card - 06
The weirdest thing just happened when I posted card number 05.  It disappeared.  So if I find it I will show you it on another day.

February Artist Playing Card - 03

February Artist Playing Card - 03

I spent the last three days at an artist retreat with thirty other collage artists.  Was I ever productive!  I created close to fifty new pieces.  It was intense but not so intense that I couldn't enjoy myself because I did.  Walking around and talking to other artists is so rejuvenating! :-)

February Artist Playing Card - 02

February Artist Playing Card - 02
Some of the artists who trade in this Facebook group cover the playing card totally and some use the playing card face as part of their work.  Some have even used the back of the card for the substrate and left the playing card side as is.  I guess it is up to the artist which gives many options.

February Artist Playing Card - 01

February Artist Playing Card - 01
I belong to an artist trading card group off of Facebook.  It really is artist playing cards since we use actual playing cards as the substrate for our work.  About thirty-six people participate monthly but we only make about twelve to sixteen ATCs or APCs.  The host sends us a list of who we are to send to out of the total number of participants.  She rotates the names monthly.  I am sure it is a lot of work.  So here is the first of the ones that I made for February.

A Minute in Time 16

A Minute in Time 16

This is the last of the series A Minute in Time.  I really got into the smallness of the series and also the folded paper part.  I know it might have been difficult to detect folds in some of the scans.

I am off to an art retreat for the weekend.  This will be my third year going.  It is so much fun.  There will be thirty artists.  We bring whatever we wish to work on and just have fun.

A Minute in Time 15

Layering allows for depth.  Works that are flat are not as interesting even when the works are abstract.  This piece is layered in such a way so that the focal points, the women, seem to be in some sort of social setting or perhaps a setting where they are exploring something.  I am reading a book about WWII and the women who went to France from England to relay messages back to England about war efforts.  Perhaps these women are members of the underground.

Another title for this piece could be Hiding the Drink.  Growing up I often found bottles of bourbon hidden in different places around the house.  I always thought it odd but now I understand what alcoholics may do to hide the fact that they are drinking.

This could easily have entitled Man's Best Friend.  The reason for the words on the gentleman's face is because I printed the image onto a page in a children's book.  The orange stripe on the face is from the book page as well.  I guess you could say this is a planned accident.  The planning part was to print on a text page.  The accident part is how it turned out.

Is this guy a detective?  Is he examining a list of suspects?  Or since there is a Japanese warship, is he looking for spies?  What is your take?

Could this be a dad with his dog who has just seen his son to the school bus?  Making up a narrative after the collage is done is even more fun that creating a narrative prior to the collage completion.

Art Is… Going to a Dark Place | SFMOMA Shorts

Difficult as it is, at some point we all need to confront disturbing themes like fear, trauma, and war. This video features artists Robert Adams, An-My Lê, Richard Misrach, and Naoya Hatakeyama discussing how going to “dark places” acts as a driving force in creating art, and often leads to the discovery of profound beauty and insight.

I particularly like how there is a hint of a building with the policemen on the roof looking down on the man with his hands up.

I rarely center images in a collage.  In this case I wanted to use the folded paper as a wave as if the police boat was cutting through the water.  I also wanted the boat and the swimmer to be on direct course.  For me it provides drama.

A Minute in Time 04
Sometimes  I have a favorite when I finish a series and 04 is one of a few that really turned out well.  I love the action of the man in this imaginary environment.  "Clipping and Pruning" works and to think none of this collage was planned.

Sometimes a piece of text just goes perfectly with an image.  I really like how this collage came together.....a scrap of this and that.  An image or two.  A piece of washi tape that was on some envelope received in the mail.  Numbers.

Cover for A Minute in Time and A Minute in Time 01

Cover for A Minute in Time
 A Minute in Time 01
I am home from San Francisco and Codex 2019 which was amazing once again.  I had been in 2017 and was wowed!  I did not spend much money purchasing books this time.  I went crazy in 2017.  However, I had my phone camera ready and found many ideas to record.

We are having very cold weather in the Pacific NW and there is snow everywhere.  Getting to the airport Monday was a challenge to say the least.  More snow is coming our way Friday and Saturday.  In fact, the weather report is for perhaps four to eight inches of new snow!  Yikes!  I thought we were done with winter which up until Monday has been mild.

The new journal that I am showing starting today is a slip knot binding.  All the collages in the journal  were bits of paper I had either on my desk or nearby.  Each of the collages has a folded piece of paper somewhere in the collage.  Make sure you really look at the chair.

Kantha Cloth Book Bags

Kantha Cloth Book Bags 01

Kantha Cloth Book Bags 02

Kantha Cloth Book Bags 03

I had ordered some Kantha cloth scraps from an Etsy vendor months ago.  It took awhile for me to decide what I wanted to do with the cloth.  Then I decided to make presents and include a book in the each bag.  So I ended up making 21 of the bags.  It seems I just could not stop but I did with number 21.  Kantha cloth comes from India.  One has to be careful about the cloth as the color might not be set if you order direct from a company in India.  Vinegar does the trick.  Ordering on Etsy from my Albuquerque vendor made this task easy since the colors were set.

52 Pickup 107

52 Pickup 107
107 concludes the 52 Pickup Series.  What fun I had with it!  I had wanted to take Seth Apter's 52 Pickup workshop for years.  When he finally came back to the Pacific NW to teach it I grabbed the opportunity and I am glad I did.  Since making this series I have done other series using many of the background techniques learned in his class.  Thanks Seth!  107 collages is very close to 1/3 of a calendar year blog postings.  It took me two weeks to complete this series.
