Heads and Masks - 01

 

I started an accordion book that has “portraits” that I am calling Heads and Masks.  I have not finished the binding of the book yet but the art inside is complete.  More tomorrow.

Just found out this morning that I have Covid.  Darn!  I have been so careful for years and then it hit.  Mild symptoms so far.  I get vaccinated every three months so I should be OK.

I really am into the collaging using mostly photographs.  I particularity like the depth of this one.

I love how this collage turned out.  The striped lines were added to the back of the photograph where there was a hole.

My narrative for this collage is the woman in the smaller photo who is being kissed is the same woman cutout that is larger.

The woman on the right is Rosa Parks.  The man on the left is a policeman.  He is fingerprinting Rosa.  I wanted to find fingerprinting in ephemera that I had but I did not have luck.  So the bottle cap will have to do.

I started this collage with the burgundy background.  I added the cropped  building  photo and then the dad and his baby. I had some writing on vellum. I thing it might have been Hebrew.  So I added that to the left side of the collage.  I am liking collaging photo on top of photo.

At first I thought that the green and red might look too Christmasy but I think the patterning takes that possible look away.

When I found this flower I had to do something with it.  Maybe this woman loved roses and had a magnificent rose garden.

I have decided it is time for me to start culling my ephemera.  It has gotten out of hand.  My plan is to look through my plastic boxes one at a time and start tossing.  Wish me luck.

 I am experimenting painting with Posca pens through teabag paper.  It kind of gives a splotchiness to the painting.  See the blue on the photograph.

 I tried putting photographs together to create the collage.  I also tried adding some paint onto the photographs.  I think I will experiment with more paint to photographs to see what I come up with.

I found some wood head images.  I combined the head with some masks that I also found.  The background is ephemera that has been gathering dust and needed to be used.

All of these spread in this journal are Key West themed.  Many times I am asked why I select certain pieces of ephemera.  Many times I am not able to explain.  It just works for me when I add a certain element.

My art buddies Michele, Jan, and Sally came to the ocean to visit for three days.  What fun we had creating art and eating good food.  It was a great 73rd birthday celebration.
