Mellow Yellow 07 - Quite Rightly

Mellow Yellow 07 - Quite Rightly
I found a set of very tiny Japanese playing cards in an antique store recently.  Of course I had to purchase them.  They all have great graphics as well as the playing card information.

Mellow Yellow 06 - Quite Rightly

Some days are so full that I forget to blog.  Yesterday was one of those.  So today is a two-fer.

Mellow Yellow 06 - Quite Rightly
I used this photograph several times recently in work that I have done.  I altered the photo in the application iColorama and you will see that alteration next month.

Mellow Yellow 05 - Quite Rightly
On a recent outing to Portland for the day I went to Scrap.  It is a store that sells recycled art materials.  I found rolls of architectural drawings.  You can see a bit of that ephemera in the upper left corner of this piece.

Mellow Yellow 03 - Quite Rightly

I got out of order somehow.....so here is number three.......

Mellow Yellow 03- Quite Rightly
Remember the days when a milk truck delivered milk to the house?  Maybe not but believe it or not that still happens in some neighborhoods.  It is rare but for awhile my next door neighbor had weekly deliveries.  Those milk bottles had heavy paper stoppers that were printed with information about the company and the type of milk.  I am using those in each of the Mellow Yellow series.

Mellow Yellow 04 - Quite Rightly
I had started this piece for a different purpose.  I set it aside and rediscovered it, unfinished.I added the three pieces that are focal points and a few other touches and am calling it done.

Mellow Yellow 02 - Quite Rightly
I found some mug shots that just captured my attention and imagination.  I love using them.  It seems like by using them that the criminals somehow get a second chance. :-)

Mellow Yellow 01 - Quite Rightly

Mellow Yellow 01 - Quite Rightly
This series honors the color yellow or other colors in the family.  I have been making papers for weeks now and I have quite a few with yellow tones.  Each of the twelve in this series has some of those yellow papers.  I got to thinking of the 1966 song.....Mellow Yellow (Quite Rightly) while working on these collages, hence the title.  More on the images and ephemera used in the next few posts.

Same idea as yesterday's pouch but different papers were used in both the pouch and the book.

Book Pocket with Bound Journal

Book Pocket (left) with bound journal

The pocket pouch on the left houses the little journal on the right.  The pocket is made from fabric papers that I made.  The pouch is sewn with sari ribbon.   The journal on the right is three signatures and is bound using tacket binding.

Buttonhole Binding # 3 (spine)

Buttonhole Binding # 3 (front)
I made several of these buttonhole bindings using the bird paper as covering.  You can make your own papers to use as well.

Buttonhole Binding #2

Buttonhole Binding (front cover)

Buttonhole Binding (spine)
I probably made ten of the buttonhole binding journals after I mastered the techniques.  It is really fun to think of other "buttonholes".  I gave several of these books as Christmas presents this year.  I will show those off in another posting.

Buttonhole  Binding (front cover)

Buttonhole Binding (spine)
This five signature buttonhole binding was really fun to make.  I am going to teach how to create this binding at the Newport Oregon Paper and Book Arts Festival in April.  I will also teach the process of faux marbling and a Secret Pocket Journal with collages at the festival.

Manzanita 20

Manzanita 20
Here we are, the last of the Manzanita postcard series. I have a slideshow again which shares most of the postcards.  For some reason I always cut one or two out of the animation.

No teabag this time.  Don't you just love vintage shore images?  The styles make me smile.  Glad we don't have to wear this time of swim costume though.  This is one of my favorites in this series.

This postcard series is random just like me.  I just let the construction of the collage speak to me.  It becomes what it becomes.  It is freeing when one can get to this point.

Oh my, here we go again with the same swimming outfit!  My eyes are like a ping pong ball, back and forth, back and forth from the bird to the small teabag collage.

Manzanita 13

Manzanita 13
I have quite a supply of ephemera.  So much that I am going to have to weed through it discarding what I know I will never use.  I have vintage grammar books, science and math books, some old geography materials, and old photos that will never go into the discard bin.  Organizing is not one of my priorities and it should be.  I am beginning to feel like an ephemera hoarder.  Yikes!

Creating a collage is just a bit like a recipe for a favorite dish.....a little of this and a little of that.  Take a cat image, a report card, postage stamp, a few bits of this and that.  Don't forget the teabag tiny collage and there you have it!

Manzanita 10

Manzanita 10
I was in Manzanita, Oregon when I made this series of postcards.  Three artist friends and I rented a house for four days.  We created, ate, chatted, ate some more, found the best cinnamon rolls, and basically had a fantastic time.
