Red Series No. 2 - 16

Red Series No. 2 - 16
I have been developing some techniques for using typed lettering in collage and really like some of the outcomes.  I purchased two typewriters last year.  One I got from a Goodwill auction and the other at an antique store in Nehalem, OR.  I really only need one but the second one was such a good deal! :-)  There are several fonts online that give the same effect without the expense of a typewriter.

Using old children's reading book illustrations is a perfect way to add a foreground feature.  I love the intensity of the colors used in the children's clothing.

I love how this piece seems to be in thirds horizontally and the children divide the composition into two parts vertically.

Red Series No. 2 - 10
I am full up.  I have spent the last three days in Newport, Oregon attending book arts and paper making workshops.  It has been so much fun but I am tired.  You know what it is like taking classes away from home.  You even know what it is like taking classes near your home.  You are tired.  I am but I made two books and a bunch of papers, learning a bunch of new tcchniques.  So yes, I am full.

Red Series No. 2 - 09
I am in seventh heaven this weekend as I am attending the Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival.  I am taking two workshops, one on tacket binding and a paper painting one.  So far I am batting 100 in the tacket workshop.  What is not to like when one gets to be by the ocean for four days and make books. :-). Happy weekend.

The woman who gave me most of the photos in the series had no idea about the subject matter or who took the photos.  So they now have a second life and everyone is free to make up their own story about what they are about.  I have my idea.  What is yours?

Red Series No. 2 - 06
What is the connection between the elements in this piece?  Maybe nothing?  Maybe something?  It is up to the viewer to decide.  Creating your own narrative is the fun part!

--------------------------

I use to go the movies all the time.  I was kind of obsessed with going.  I do not go any more.  I wait until the films are out on DVD or I stream them.  Hence I watch fewer films than I did.  The main reason(s) that I wait is because of the expense.  It is hard to justify the price these days when in just a few short months I can watch them in the comfort of my own home.  We have a rather large television screen and it is so easy to stream them into our home.  One other reason is that I started falling asleep in the movie theater.  I just could not justify the expensive sleeping chair! :-)  Aging here!

I have a list of films that I want to see.....

Lion
La La Land
The Red Turtle
20th Century Women
Hidden Figures
Manchester By the Sea
The Salesman
Moonlight
Fences
Loving

Even though the photograph of the woman is faint I find it effective.  I was given a bunch of photos in an album.  To remove the black paper backing I used water.  I am not sure if the water had any effect on the actual photo or not.

I do not know what it is about the Red Cross. But that symbol just jumps out at me whenever I see it. This piece works for me in so many ways.  My eye first goes to the cross and then the girl before circling around again.  What about you?

Red Series No. 2 - 02
I love that three elements works so well together.  My eye just keeps going in circles.  This series came together rather quickly.  It was done in steps.....working on twenty sides all at once and then turning the collages over and working on the remaining twenty sides.

I do not know the name of this piece but it is another miniature photo.  It makes me smile.

Red Series 1 and 2 Box and Binding

When I completed the Red Series No. 1 I did not have any notion that I would start and complete Red Series No. 2.  What I did know was that I needed to somehow bind series No 1 so that I could keep all the series together.  That started a search for just how that would work.  I found a binding which is called Laura Ashley.  Yes, the same Laura Ashley that sells linens.  I started the process of making the signatures that would hold the ten back-to-back collages.  But that meant that there were two more pockets available in the signature.....see last photo below.  That meant I could do twenty more collages, ten back-to-back.

In my head the number 20 stuck.  Fast forward the Collage Society retreat at the end of February.  I began and finished twenty times two collages there.  When I returned home I started thinking, John, you created way too many collages.  You only needed ten back-to-back or twenty collages.  I use to be really good at math and problem solving.  What happened?

So I now have 40 Red Series Collages.  Over the next month plus I will share those.  Below you will see the binding that resulted and the box that I made to store the signatures in.  This became quite a long project but I am very pleased with the outcomes.  Enjoy!  If you are tired of the red series after No. 1 skip the next month plus. :-)  Just so you know, the extra collages will be mail art.  These collages fit nicely in the pocket postcard that I designed and showed on this blog previously. :-)

Making a background using just sewing patterns is most effective.  Overlapping the pieces of pattern tissue changes the color from light to dark just with adherence.  Line quality is built in since there are plenty of them on the pattern tissue.  Add you favorite mixed media techniques and you have a spread quite quickly.

Simplicity

Simplicity

Sometimes total abstraction is just the way to go.  I love these three colors together, cadmium light red, teal, and some sort of orange.

=============

Tuesday Morning - Not far from where I live is a home furnishings store called Tuesday Morning. They have discounted items and it is my go to place for napkins.  They are cheap.  They are great for collage work and I suppose they are the discontinued ones that other stores no longer include in their inventory.  I am not sure about that but I do know that what you find is what you find and you might never see that particular napkin again.

I now have three plastic boxes full of napkins.  I think I can stop collecting for quite some time. Someone near and dear to my heart thinks I should totally use all the art supplies that I have and then I can buy again.  What fun is that?  Anyway, Tuesday morning is online as well as brick and mortar.

April ATCs - International ATC Group - Group 01

April 2017 ATCs group 1
I chose the theme "paper" for the ATCs that I did for April.  The international group that I belong to has six themes this year.  We can do them in any order we like.  I will post the rest over the next two days.  It was an easy theme for me as I have so much ephemera, boxes of it!

Secrets 05 Number 2

Secrets 05 Number 2
Creating secrets in the Secrets Series has been fun.  The series actually is leading me to some upcoming pieces I believe.  This summer the NW Collage Society is having a summer show at the Seattle City Hall.  We can submit three works to the juror.  Although there is no theme for this show, the show has a title, Hot Town!  Summer in the City.
