52 Pickup 102

52 Pickup 102

I keep finding a few more of this series.  Sometimes I just hate computers as there are times when I can't find what I am looking for and then all of a sudden it appears.  This morning I found more 52 Pickup ATCs to 107.  Hmm!

This one is not a favorite of mine.  Very stern looking.  I wonder why I chose this figure??

This series is rapidly coming to an end as it only goes to 103. I have gone a bit crazy with ATCs and APCs (artist playing cards) for months.  I had not journaled in a long time.  This past weekend I got out a journal that I had recently completed and in five days I made 18 collages.  My plan was to do one a day for a month. Ha!  So much for that plan since 18 evolved quickly.

I love this lady with her cat!  Just think of all life's history she must hold.  I can just see her canning in the kitchen or making cinnamon rolls or writing a novel, doing whatever she wants.

Two-fer Monday......I was a slouch yesterday and so today is a two for one day.

Not much to say this morning other than I am working on a new collage project and am driven to work on it. :-)

I remember a student in a class I took who was troubled when she had to cover up so much of a background that she had made.  Although I am over that part of my collage art life, I understand it. I had been there. This piece is an excellent example of how much the background disappeared with the middle ground and foreground images.

My connection between the goose and the newspaperman is that they both squawk.  At least the newspaperman use to bark headlines to attract sales.  I guess that is a relic of an idea from the old black and white films taking place in a large city like New York.  Most likely it does not happen today!

I love narrative.  I can take what seems like diverse information or images and make sense out of those images or information. Just what does lightning have to do with a policeman and a child?  Why is the number 4 significant?  What do you take of all of them together?

For me this one is all about color and balance.  It just works as a composition.

Today I decided that I am going to start and complete a journal spread a day for a month. Yikes!  I don't want a lot of pressure so maybe I should say I am going to do between 28 and 31 spreads in a month!  Yikes, that sounds like pressure, too!  Hmm!  Maybe I should define month in a different way!  Back to the drawing board on my thinking process!

Sound words in a collage give a great visual to the work.  They can give meaning to the action of the collage or just provide an interesting visual.

Now that I look at this ATC I think I probably should have added some other feature to the top third....just something small to off balance the strength of the bottom two thirds.  This is a good lesson in putting things aside for a period of time and revisiting them later.  What seemed to be finished may not be.  Of course, the opposite can happen where one puts too much in a piece.  Knowing when to stop is a juggling act! :-)

Red.  I love how you get pops of color when you add the slightest bit of red to a work.  In this case, I think it is effective to help movement in this ATC.  My eye circles the bird's eye as I follow the red around the head of the bird.  Then I jump back to the rabbit.  I imagine many people might see the rabbit first though or perhaps the bird.

I am partial to shades of teal, this one being on the darker side.  To me it is a calming color.  Funny how we have our favorites.  I wonder what causes that.  Why do we like a certain color over another?  Is it biological or cultural?  Thoughts?

February Artist Playing Card - 05

Found number 5!  Yeah!
There is going to be a show of artist playing cards in Illinois next month.  I finally got mine together and I am mailing them today.  The ones I am entering I have not shown here but will after this series is completed.

I probably would have called this Geese Crossing if it was a separate work and not part of a series.  I love the man's eyes.  Perhaps he is dumbfounded with how close he is to the geese.  Perhaps he has had experience with geese and does not trust them.  One of my earliest memories is of geese chasing me on the farm.  They hurt if they get you!

I do like the large bird in the foreground pushing everything else into the background.  The letter C which is background but looks like it is being eaten by the bird or at least is in the bird's mouth also works.  I am working on some more ATCs for the Facebook group I am in and as I do I am noticing all the work that is put in on the background.  Much of it is covered up with other ephemera.  That is the name of the collage game though.

Mark Bradford mentions at the end of the video link below about how his work being in the Smithsonian and being a black male is super layered.  Taking that thought a different direction I really connected with that idea as a technique phrase.  The pieces in 52 Pickup are super layered.

Some days are just packed full of things to do.  I am on a mission to make some book bags out of Kantha cloth for small books.  So far I have made 14 bags, six of which will be in two book arts shows coming up.  One will be in Edmonds, Washington and the other in Newport, Oregon.  My problem is deciding which books will go in which bag and what will be an example of what is in the bags displayed next to the bags.  I have to take a photo of how I would like them displayed so that the curators get the idea.

I also finished eight ATCs yesterday and got them ready for mailing on Monday.  The theme for my group was "cloth".  By now you know me and how I create.  I just start and the piece leads me to the finished product.  This is my usual MO but sometimes I do get an idea of what I want for a finished piece.  Even then a lot is left to chance or is that intuition?

I now belong to an artist trading card group on Facebook that actually goes by APC or artist playing card.  Actual playing cards are used and part of the face of the card should be included in the final collage.  After this series here, I will share ones that I made for this group in the last two months.  One can choose to participate each month or not.  Here is the Facebook link if you are interested in joining this type of group....

I suppose even the postman has stress but I am thinking that the job is fairly independent and one gets to be outside a building all day long.  I know there aren't many postmen who ride bicycles anymore but wouldn't that be the best if one could exercise and get paid at the same time.
