Orange Series No. 29
I am captivated by the monkey's eyes and those of the two children.  It is as if the Frenchman is reading something startling about either one of the other three characters, the monkey or the two children.

I can imagine that the doctor in the white coat and the man in the vintage photo are one and the same. Perhaps he was the local town physician.  Perhaps he was the sheriff.  Or maybe there is something more sinister about these characters.  Maybe not.  Maybe they were pillars of the local society.  I think I have been watching too much of Hinterland on Netflix! :-)

This piece possibly is my favorite of the Orange Series.  The background really came together.  It could have been an abstract piece standing on its own.  I love how the woman by the car seems to interact with the woman standing.  The voyeur is creepy but seems to fit or perhaps is odd man out but works with the piece.

This one is all about strength...super powers, brute strength, and ray guns.  So have you noticed that each one in this series has certain repetitions.  One of those is taking a poem, my favorite is the Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.  I copy the poem into Word and then space between each letter 3 or 4 spaces.  That takes a bit of time.  Then I print the poem on tissue paper for use as ephemera in my collages.

I just love the "Jetson's" type images.  Just think of what was thought to be our future fifty years ago. I don't see flying cars but I do know that there are drones.  And soon there will be driverless cars on the road, I guess! Just think of the technology revolution that has gone on.  I remember when I was in sixth grade in Bethesda, MD.  I went into D.C. to the National Geographic Society building.  They had a phone of the future.  It actually was a picture phone.  And here we are, we actually have the ability to use our IPads and IPhones where we can see each other when talking.

Orange Series No. 24

Well, I deceived you!  Originally I had create 24 works in the Orange Series.  Then I made the cover for it and I needed to have what I thought was three more back-to-back collages.  I made them and put them inside the cover.  I had one too many.  So now I have 30 in the series.  I will share the cover with number 30.  I really like how it came out....well, it is the mock up.  I have to make the final cover so that it can include no 30.

I particularly like how the man in green is situated in this piece.  My eye is drawn toward the other two images because of this stance which in turn leads me across the piece.  Also since he is in step moving forward that gives the piece movement.

I have used maps, numbers, Portfolio pastels, vintage photos, cartoons, focal points, handmade papers, Woodies, tissue paper, acrylic paint, and graphite pencils in the Orange series.  I am working on the cover to house the series.  It will be a wrap around closure with embedded magnets, a new method of closure for me.  It works well, too.  I used some techniques for the wrap around that I learned at a workshop in Oregon in June.  Thanks Margo Klass.

I love how this one came together and it was not planned but evolved.  The woman is looking through binoculars and the cartoon is what is seen through binoculars.  Also, bird watching seems to be involved and as we know binoculars are a favorite tool of birdwatchers.

Did you ever watch the television show, The Lone Ranger?  I did when I was growing up.  I loved that show!  Anything to do with cowboys and Indians and I was ready to sit and enjoy.  I am sure that if I were to watch an episode today I would find lots of stereotyping and racism.  So I will just leave it at the memory level.  Could this little boy be the real Lone Ranger?  In my imagination he could be.

Oh how I love the softness of the yellow in this piece.  If you were to see my garden I do not do yellow with very few exceptions.  I do love daffodils and tulips that are yellow.  I have a ground cover, a succulent, that has a yellow blossom, but that is it!  I also love how the cartoon goes so well with the two romantics.

It is funny how we have favorites and this is one of them.  All the collage Gods seemed to line up and cooperate.  I love how the performer is leaning in.  The balance just seems to be correct.  The background really works for me as well.  Its layers all come together well in my opinion.

I just completed a workshop in cold wax with Judi Wise in Gig Harbor, WA.  What a fun time!  Now I am thinking I might finish off the orange series with a layer or two of cold wax.  I will try it on one piece first and see what happens or I might do a separate new piece as a test.  I did not like the encaustic process when I tried it, but I do like working with cold wax.  Funny how that goes!

On No 11 I might add a bit of pigment just under the postage stamp to tone down the lightness in one area.

When I cut up the vintage photo that I found at a garage sale I wondered what to do with the arm of the woman who was cut out of the photo.  The arm remained and I did not want it there.  Then I thought about my little liquid acrylic swirls that I do on tissue paper.  So as you see the arm problem is solved as the arm hides behind the black swirl. Perfect solution!

Recently I purchased Distress Crayons by Ranger.  OMG!  I love them.  They are water soluable and they apply just like a crayon but one can rub them into the substrate with a finger.  I particularly like them when I have to cover up something with some color but want the pigment to be transparent.  For instance, the black lettering was done on tissue paper.  Some of the white color of the tissue paper showed after drying.  Distress Crayons to the rescue.

I finished all 24 of the orange series yesterday.  When I was done I laid them out on the kitchen counter to look at them as a group.  I had seen someone do this on Pinterest and thought that was a good idea.  It was fun to see them as half.  Since they are back-to-back I can not look at all 24 simultaneously.

One thing about using vintage papers is the musty smell many of them have.  Thank goodness for dryer sheets, you know the ones that remove static cling.  The scented ones work really well at masking any odor.  Just put the papers in a plastic baggie with the dryer sheet and the problem is solved.

I am breaking the rules on this one.....my rules anyway.  Sometimes that happens.  I usually tend to include odd numbers when doing focal points.  This one has four.  Perhaps it works for me because the monkey is carrying a banner over his shoulder.  I had just three images and then I added the stamp on white envelope because it worked.
