Empress Dowager Cixi and Mrs. Conger

Empress Dowager Cixi and Mrs. Conger

Several months ago I attended a reading of a new book by Grant Hayter-Menzies, The Empress and Mrs. Conger.  The book is about the Empress Dowager Cixi and Sarah Pike Conger who grew to be friends right after the Boxer Rebellion.  This piece is my tribute to their two year friendship.

The Dowager Empress was quite fit and spent time with her ladies in waiting at a Chinese Pavilion known as the Pavilion in the Clouds which took some effort to reach.  The Empress may have spent time with Mrs. Conger in the pavilion exchanging stories and learning of each others' culture.

Is this the "so much red" spread you were talking about? Well, I think you found a way to tone it down, in a wonderful way I love this complex background! Amazing. This is one of my favorites of yours!!!

Hi John,

I just found this beautiful piece, and how lovely that my book should inspire you to create it!

I plan to be in Seattle again this fall with another book - this one my biography of Pauline Benton, the American-born master of Chinese shadow theatre. I'll send you guys info about it as soon as dates firm up.

All best - Grant
