On a recent outing to Portland for the day I went to Scrap.  It is a store that sells recycled art materials.  I found rolls of architectural drawings.  You can see a bit of that ephemera in the upper left corner of this piece.

Remember the days when a milk truck delivered milk to the house?  Maybe not but believe it or not that still happens in some neighborhoods.  It is rare but for awhile my next door neighbor had weekly deliveries.  Those milk bottles had heavy paper stoppers that were printed with information about the company and the type of milk.  I am using those in each of the Mellow Yellow series.

This series honors the color yellow or other colors in the family.  I have been making papers for weeks now and I have quite a few with yellow tones.  Each of the twelve in this series has some of those yellow papers.  I got to thinking of the 1966 song.....Mellow Yellow (Quite Rightly) while working on these collages, hence the title.  More on the images and ephemera used in the next few posts.

The pocket pouch on the left houses the little journal on the right.  The pocket is made from fabric papers that I made.  The pouch is sewn with sari ribbon.   The journal on the right is three signatures and is bound using tacket binding.

I probably made ten of the buttonhole binding journals after I mastered the techniques.  It is really fun to think of other "buttonholes".  I gave several of these books as Christmas presents this year.  I will show those off in another posting.

This five signature buttonhole binding was really fun to make.  I am going to teach how to create this binding at the Newport Oregon Paper and Book Arts Festival in April.  I will also teach the process of faux marbling and a Secret Pocket Journal with collages at the festival.

I have quite a supply of ephemera.  So much that I am going to have to weed through it discarding what I know I will never use.  I have vintage grammar books, science and math books, some old geography materials, and old photos that will never go into the discard bin.  Organizing is not one of my priorities and it should be.  I am beginning to feel like an ephemera hoarder.  Yikes!

Creating a collage is just a bit like a recipe for a favorite dish.....a little of this and a little of that.  Take a cat image, a report card, postage stamp, a few bits of this and that.  Don't forget the teabag tiny collage and there you have it!

I was in Manzanita, Oregon when I made this series of postcards.  Three artist friends and I rented a house for four days.  We created, ate, chatted, ate some more, found the best cinnamon rolls, and basically had a fantastic time.
