Making a background using just sewing patterns is most effective.  Overlapping the pieces of pattern tissue changes the color from light to dark just with adherence.  Line quality is built in since there are plenty of them on the pattern tissue.  Add you favorite mixed media techniques and you have a spread quite quickly.

Yes - a good demo of the use of the pattern paper (reminding me I bought some in a charity shop at least 2 years ago and have yet to experiment with it!!!)
